It’s pricey, but - given its combo of features - I think it’s actually a pretty good value. Check it out below and consider subscribing to my YouTube channel if you like videos on lithium batteries and DIY solar projects!Īfter testing all these monitors, the SmartShunt ended up being my favorite. I made a video version of this review which gives an overview of each monitor and walks through my testing. Upgrade Pick: Victron Energy BMV-712 Smart 500A.Best Screen: Renogy 500A Battery Monitor.Top Pick: Victron Energy SmartShunt 500A.Keep reading for my full battery monitor reviews and recommendations. The 2 other monitors I tested are also great options. ![]() It’ll perform the basic functions of monitoring your battery’s voltage, state of charge, remaining capacity, and charging or discharging current. If you’re on a budget, I think the AiLi 350A Battery Monitor is a good bare-bones monitor that has the necessary features and settings you need to monitor your batteries for cheap. Plus there’s a water-resistant version with an IP65 rating for wet or marine environments. It’s the easiest to install, works with virtually every type of RV and solar battery, has built-in Bluetooth for remote monitoring, and is one of the most customizable and accurate battery monitors I’ve used. Luckily, it seems to be more accurate than 1%.Over the past couple months, I’ve been testing 4 of the best battery monitors for RVs, boats, and 12V to 48V solar systems.Īfter installing and setting up each monitor, poring over their product manuals, performing charging and discharging cycles, and testing extra features such as Bluetooth and midpoint monitoring, the Victron SmartShunt is my favorite battery monitor. I need to keep my load under 3A, so that's on reason I had to characterize this Monitor. Is that Attention or Attenuation? Again I had to call Renogy to understand its usage, and to clarify their video wich left me wondering what holding the up arrow did.Īlso, their spec call out a 1% accuracy. As programming the module progressed, I had to download the data sheet which helped but still woefully unclear about how the buttons worked, like Attn. Did Renogy even proof read it? I called Renogy to verify where the solar panel needed to be connected. The instructions look like they were translated from Chinese (or some foreign language). The instructions were abominaly hard to understand even to someone who has made a living on designing electronics. I'm an electronics engineer for 30 years and very comfortable with this. It's a bit of a challenge understanding how it functions. ![]() I've been testing and characterizing this monitor for a few weeks. Very good addition to my project item as described, very fast shipping, nicely packaged, product as described. 5 Very good addition to my project item as described.sometimes science is just like magic, just can't be explained. It appears to monitoring the battery charge.īought this about a month ago, have no idea how to do 12v followed instruction manual and it worked. 5 It appears to monitoring the battery charge. That was only a short term frustration, and I am very satisfied. The instruction manual should be re-written. The back arrow has two functions differentiated by a long press and a short press. I did have to consult a YouTube video on how to program the parameters of my system. I have this display mounted on my living room wall where I can glance at the green display throughout the day. I also did not want a link to a Smart Phone or internet connection. I have a large off-grid solar setup and I wanted something one simple display screen with all the relevant data without having to scroll through different screens to receive the info I need on the state of the battery. That was my experience with the Renogy Battery Monitor. One experiences a little joy when looking for a product and then actually finding exactly what one wants.
